Learning a few things from TOMS social responsibility

Brands nowadays are very concerned about their reputation and standing. They give it a considerable thought on how to project and portray a considerably socially responsible image. But despite a certain amount of planning is involved in it, many such ventures still end up looking contrived and artificial in the corporate social responsibility programs. It can be due to the fact that many of these initiatives are dressed up in such rhetoric that’s so far-from-original and having a negative impact on the cause.

Toms Footwear a Step Ahead

Tom Shoe Company was established by Blake Mycoskie befriended just for the need of proper covering feet, Once in Argentina village he saw that few village children are running without covering shoes and unable to protect their feet. He wants to help them, thought and founded Toms where every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes for a child in need as on One for One Offer. This is exactly taken from the TOMS original idea which is “for every pair purchased today a new pair of shoes will be given tomorrow”.

TOMS new discounted marketplace

A report by UNICEF suggests that each year, nearly 10 million children under the age of 5 die from largely preventable causes. What we consider a necessity, i.e. shoes, are a luxury in many parts of the globe. There are many get infectious diseases just because they don’t have a pair of shoes to protect themselves.

This, particularly, was the reason which inspired BlakeMycoskie, 33, to launch a shoe store which will donate one pair of shoes to a child in need against every shoes that is purchased. It was on his trip to Argentina when Mycoskie came up with this idea, and on returning back home he formed TOMS shoes — a movement that is now saving lives of children.

Right from the very start Mycoskie was pretty sure about the idea of “One for One”. He made no lawyerly disclaimers about ‘portion of proceeds’ or turbid foundations being funded through a fixed percentage of profits. One pair sold, one pair given to a kid in need, that was all the idea of TOMS shoes, and he made it happen.

With the shoes idea achieving success, TOMS has now started another venture of donating eyewear, with the same philosophy and devotion. “Every time we sell a pair of our sunglasses at TOMS we give someone their sight back,” Mycoskie explained at an interview given recently. “We’ve been doing that for seven years and now have given out 10 million shoes and 200,000 people their sight back”.

When this idea struck the market, many like minded firms also jumped into the pool with the same strategy and devotion. Seeing this advancement TOMS started a marketplace to gather all such entrepreneurs. Using this marketplace as a platform Mycoskie found a huge pool of would-be vendors comprising 30 companies which were selling 200 different products. What these companies had in common was that all were having a blend of charitable values along with business ideas.

TOMS marketplace offers things like headphones, with proceeds going to help people get their hearing back, or a cycle that assists in providing clean drinking water in underdeveloped countries.

You can also be the part of this initiative by using coupon code for TOMS, through which will play your part in a good cause.

This market place will run all seasons, and with you buying gifts and apparels for your daily needs, people far away will be getting things of basic needs. So, when you are shopping for dad's birthday using a post-Christmas discount coupon, don’t forget to check back for mom's birthday in June. Your necessities are luxuries for many.
